The five-star Shangri-La hotel in Dubai, the chain's first Middle East property, will be using Tabreed's cooling system throughout the 43-storey twin tower complex, stated a press release.
Guests at the Shangri-La - now under construction – will benefit from air conditioned tennis courts. Owners of the Hotel have decided to use the area, previously earmarked for the air conditioning plant, to provide guests and residents with tennis courts. In addition, Tabreed's system reduces cooling costs, reduces the size of maintenance teams and is more environmentally friendly than conventional air conditioning.
The Shangri-La will feature 300 hotel rooms with two Executive Club floors, plus 119 furnished apartments, 62 unfurnished flats and four office floors. Construction has reached the 35th floor. January 2003 is targeted for the official opening with total completion in May next year.
Tabreed's facility is already contracted to service other buildings in the area including the Rotana Hotel, Tower Number One Suites and Noor Al-Maarif School, the first school in the UAE to use the Tabreed cooling system.
Tabreed is the only company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) offering district cooling services as a utility and currently has approximately 100,000 refrigerating tons under contract.
