The Saudi evening daily Al-Massaiya will cease publication from April 19 after 18 years on the newsstands, publishing group Al-Jazira announced Wednesday, April 11.
Al-Jazira said it would instead publish Al-Usra , a daily focusing on family affairs, but gave no launch date.
Journalists said the closure of Al-Massaiya was brought about by a series of losses over recent years.
Saudi Arabia still has 11 daily newspapers carrying general information, three of which are published in English, and one economic paper Al-Iqtissadiya .
Two other Saudi-financed papers, Al-Hayat and Al-Sharq Al-Awsat , among the most influential Arabic-language publications, are edited in London. — (AFP, Riyadh)
