The Saudi Allied Sugar Company intends to expand its white sugar production capacity by 50 percent July 2002. The factory’s white sugar output currently stands at 500,000 tons per annum, and it is intended that with the project’s completion, this capacity will reach 765,000 tons annually, Reported Al-Jazirah.
Company Director General Mohammed Ajlan said that the expansion project aims to satisfy the three percent per annum increase in demand for white sugar. Since opening the refinery in August 1997, the Allied Sugar Company produced and refined more than two million tons of white sugar, which is translated into 40 million 50-kilogram bags.
Ajlan added that the price per 50-kilogram sack of sugar decreased by four SR in the last two weeks, a six percent price fall. The price per sack fell from SR 66 ($17.6) to SR 62 ($16.5). In the past few weeks, international crude sugar prices declined noticeably, reported Al-Hayat. — (Mena Report)
