Architectural plans for the new Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain campus, to be built in Busaiteen, Muharraq are well advanced. The site is adjacent to the new King Hamad General Hospital which will be the major affiliated teaching hospital of the medical school. Both buildings will be completed in mid 2007.
The campus architecture will borrow from the traditions of Ireland, and the heritage of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The landscaping around the architecture will allow significant opportunities to showcase local and traditional art on a large scale. The core building will comprise two distinct areas linked by bridges and galleries. This will be developed using pillars, balconies with deeply recessed windows and incorporating bold Celtic and Islamic wall patterns. The landmark campus will be positioned to allow a perfect vantage point from the Sh. Isa causeway.
Professor Kevin O’Malley, President of the MUB highlighting the initiative “ We plan to develop the architecture incorporating references that are inspired by Irish and Bahraini history and Celtic and Islamic cultures. This unique blend of architectural styles is clearly symbolic of our shared commitment to healthcare education and training in the kingdom as well as being a meeting point for our respective histories and cultures. This will be an optimal environment in which students can develop into first class healthcare professionals-people of action and reflection.
The RCSI-MUB is owned and run by the RCSI and initially offers a six or five year degree programme in Medicine with additional courses such as Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Denistry and other health related professions to be added as the project develops.
