A decision was recently agreed upon by Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to push forward with plans to establish a major railway project that would connect the countries' ports and link the six member-states into an efficient and cost effective communications system.
GCC Transport and Communication Ministers have decided to appoint a five member committee to manage the initial phase of the project. The team would be comprised of international experts that would seek to finalize the feasibility study for the proposed railway project, according to Khaleej Times.
The participating ministers concluded in a recent meeting on the matter in the emirate of Abu Dhabi on Wednesday that they would invite the World Bank to aid in technical aspects of the railway project and provide other assistance.
Calling for closer cooperation between the six member-states in the field of transport and Communications, Minister Al Mansour stated, "Such a cooperation was crucial to the attainment of the goal of common GCC citizenship and link the bloc into a formidable economic force."
An emergency plan was also adopted by GCC minister to be implemented on GCC seaports if Hormoz and Bab Al Mandab straits are closed, stated Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansour, UAE Minister of Governmental Sector Development.
