Multi-million dollar projects associated with Qatar's successful bid to host the Asian Games in 2006 are attracting great interest from the international sports equipment & infrastructure sector. Many companies have already committed to attend the Qatar Sports International exhibition, according to a company press release.
This is the first B2B event designed to showcase related products and services. QSi is being organized by the Qatar National Olympic Committee (QNOC) in partnership with exhibition organizers Fairs & Exhibitions Ltd.
Khalifa Al-Subaey, Chairman of the QSi Organizing Committee explained that "apart from an annual budget of around $75 million, much more will be invested in infrastructure and sports facilities for the Asian Games. One example is the complete re-development of the Khalifa Stadium site into a state of the art sports city, this project is expected to cost $100 million alone."
The Games organizers are putting together an extensive program of new projects and renovation of existing facilities. QNOC President Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani explained that “the overall scope of the work being undertaken will be concluded shortly by the Doha Asian Games Organizing Committee (DAGOC). QSi sets out to promote awareness of the business opportunities surrounding the 2006 Doha Asian Games”.
According to Al-Subaey, "the scope and scale of the projects will reflect the substantial funds being made available for the Games". Al-Subaey said the following projects were being planned: Complete renovation and expansion of the Khalifa stadium complex, a new Olympic Village to accommodate 10,000 athletes, public transport projects and accommodation for estimated 20,000 participants, officials and visitors, upgrading all nine existing stadiums including the Itihad and Rayyan Clubs, a new 36 lane Bowling Alley complex, new Shooting Range, Horse Racing track and stables, renovation of the Tennis Stadium, as well as numerous requirements for sports facilities infrastructure such as electronic scoreboards, seating, sports equipment, flooring and lighting. — (menareport.com)
