Outgoing Vodafone Qatar CEO Richard Daly said on Monday that Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) remains a major threat to licenced telecommunication providers in Qatar and it should be stopped as it is illegal.
“It is an irony that we are in competition with VoIP plans that are not even legal in the country.
We have spent billions on getting a telecom licence in Qatar, but our business is affected by illegal services like VoIP,” Richard said.
“We know it’s a boon for expatriates but it is illegal. It is time that ictQatar intervened and found ways to stop its use,” he added.
Asked if Qatar should follow the UAE and ban VoIP calls, Richard said, “It is for ictQatar to decide. All we want is that our business should not be affected by service providers who are not legal.” Meanwhile, at the same function, Vodafone Qatar introduced its new CEO Kyle Whitehill, who will join the company from July.
Whitehill will take over from Daly, who will be returning home to the UK for personal reasons.
Whitehill has previously held senior positions including those of enterprise business unit director in the UK and COO in India.
