ALBAWABA – Qatar announced signing a new agreement that states supplying Kuwait with liquified natural gas (LNG) for the next 15 years. This agreement is the second of its kind, as the two countries signed a previous agreement in 2020, aimed to ease pressure on the Kuwaiti government which resorted to power cuts during this summer’s heat waves.
Qatar and Kuwait new gas agreement
Official sources stated that the two countries will sign the new agreement today in Kuwait City. Under this deal, the Kuwaiti government will purchase 2 million tons of liquified natural gas (LNG) from Qatar annually for the next 15 years.
The Qatari government will begin supplying the gas in 2025 and the new signed agreement will last until 2035, according to Bloomberg.
Kuwait power cuts
It is worth mentioning that the Kuwaiti government was forced to implement several power cuts earlier this year, particularly during this summer’s intense heat waves. Despite being one of the largest oil producer countries in the Middle East, the country faced high demands for gas supplies due to the extreme temperature in summer.

Summer temperatures in Kuwait often exceed 50°C, significantly increasing the use of air conditioning and overall energy demand. Kuwaiti authorities reportedly urged to reduce electricity use during peak hours between 11 AM and 5 PM.
Qatar gas supplies
Qatar is one of the world's largest exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The country plans to expand its LNG production by 85%, increasing the current production from 77 million tons per year to 142 million tons per year by 2030.
