(MEBG) – An official at Qatar’s General Petroleum Corp (QGPC) has proclaimed that Qatar plans to raise its oil production capacity to around one million barrels a day (bpd) by 2001, reported Gulf News on July 12.

Qatar currently has capacity of 854,000 bpd and an Opec production quota of 659,000 bpd. It is the smallest producer of oil in Opec.

According to the official, QGPC recently awarded a $250 million gas-lift contract to Italy's Snamprogetti, to raisethe sustainable capacity at Qatar's largest onshore oilfield, Duhkan, to 380,000 bpd from its current level of 300,000 bpd. The official added that "similar measures are planned for Bul Hanaine and Maydam Mahzam offshore fields and tenders are being invited,".
