Qatar is to build a $3 billion aluminium plant, the Ministry of Energy and Industry announced.
The construction of the plant, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, which holds a 51 per cent stake, and Norway’s Norsk Hydro, is to begin in June 2006.
The plant will have an annual production capacity of 570,000 tonnes of aluminium sheets.
The announcement was made in the course of a meeting between Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah, Qatar's Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry, and Norway’s Minister of Petro-leum and Energy Thorild Widway in Oslo on Friday. According to the official <i>Qatar News Agency</i>, the meeting focused on bilateral relations in the spheres of oil, gas and petrochemical industries.
