A leading Doha-based Muslim scholar Dr Thaqeel Al Shamri has called for a monitoring system to check the operation of "greedy" real estate agents in the country, who, he said, are still fleecing people by hiking house rents beyond the legal limits set by government.

According to the Peninsula, he made these comments while delivering the Friday sermon at the Omar bin Khatab mosque in Medinat Khalifa.

The scholar said, though the law issued by the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has specified that rents cannot be hiked more than 10 per cent within a specific period, many landlords and real estate agents are ignoring this. He cited a recent instance where the rent for an apartment was raised from QR1,500 to 5,000 at one stretch.
