Qatar Telecom (Qtel) recorded 427 million Qatari riyals ($117 million) in revenues during the second quarter of 2002, a 12.6 percent increase compared to the same period in 2001. Net profits reached QR 249.3 million, a growth of 12.6 percent over the same period in 2001.
For the second time, a two-week period of free GSM connection was offered throughout the country during the quarter adding over 21,000 new subscribers. The company also launched the Hala Plus Prepaid GSM card during the same period. Hala Plus welcomed 11,000 subscribers within the first weeks of its launch. In addition, tariff reductions of up to 62 per cent on international call rates, to around 250 countries throughout the world, were introduced.
Q-Tel was established in 1998, after the Qatar Public Telecommunications Corporation merged with the Qatar National Telephone Service, Cable and Wireless and the Telecommunications Department at the Ministry of Communications and Transport.
The company recorded QR323.2 million ($88.7 million) in revenues in the first quarter of 2002, an 18 percent rise compared with figures from the previous year. — (menareport.com)
