The diligence and commitment of high achieving students was recognized at a recent awards reception at Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q). Hosted by Dean Ahmad Dallal, the event celebrated the 84 outstanding students who earned first and second academic honors over the course of their recent studies.

The reception acknowledged students, ranging from first years to graduating seniors, who earned academic honors during the fall and spring 2017 semesters. The award winners are studying towards GU-Q’s Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree, a unique interdisciplinary program that prepares students to tackle important issues within an international context.

“The students who achieved honors this year are an example of the level of strong commitment our students have towards Georgetown’s value of academic excellence,” said GU-Q Dean Ahmad Dallal. “It gives us great pride to see so many of our students not only succeeding, but excelling in their academic pursuits.”

The academic honors are awarded based on the students’ grade point averages (GPAs) for each semester. Those who have a GPA of 3.9 and above are awarded first honors, while those with GPAs in the 3.7 to 3.899 range receive second honors. Approximately half of the students invited to the event received honors in both the spring and fall semesters, showing their commitment and dedication to their studies.

“It’s a big honor to be of this caliber in such a highly rated institution – Georgetown students are already the cream of the crop, and to be among the high achievers there is a big privilege,” said Amber Faull-Cryan (SFS’18), who received second honors in spring 2017 and first honors for the fall 2017 semester. “It’s hard work, but if you’re enjoying your classes and if you’re enjoying the content of what you learn, your output reflects that.”

GU-Q students are taught using the same curriculum as Georgetown’s Main Campus in Washington, D.C. and can major in Culture and Politics, International Economics, International History, or International Politics. The University’s graduates now work in a diverse range of industries including education, finance, energy, sports management, media, and communications.
