Tamkeen continues to support to Bahraini fishermen

Tamkeen announces that it has extended the Bahraini Fishermen Support Scheme to serve an additional 1,000 fishermen. The scheme is one of many support programmes Tamkeen offers as part of its efforts to boost the capabilities of private sector enterprises in Bahrain.

The Bahraini Fishermen Support Scheme enables Bahraini fishermen to upgrade their machinery and equipment by subsidising 80% of their cost, with a maximum grant of BD 3,000 for boat owners and BD 5,000 for dhow owners. The additional 1,000 beneficiaries will bring the total number of fishermen expected to be served through the scheme to 2,100 fishermen.

All Bahraini fishermen with a valid license from the Agriculture and Marine Resources Affairs can apply at Ebdaa Bank’s Budaiya branch to benefit from this scheme. The scheme also allows fishermen to benefit again from the programme after two years.

Mohammed Bucheery, Tamkeen Acting Vice-President for Private Sector Support said in a comment, “The fisheries industry is a critical element when it comes to the food security of the Kingdom, and is among the earliest professions in Bahrain. Working with our stakeholders, Tamkeen created this scheme to enable Bahraini fishermen to adapt more modern and effective methods which will make their business more prosperous and sustainable and contribute to national economic growth.”

Launched in 2009, the scheme has already been extended twice before due to high demand. 905 Bahraini fishermen have been served through the scheme as of December 2012, with Tamkeen’s total contribution totaling in excess of BD 3.4 million.

To date, more than 77,000 Bahrainis and enterprises have benefited from Tamkeen’s programmes, with more than 150,000 beneficiaries set to benefit from these programmes in all.
