In preparation for Qatar’s third National Sports Day, Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) is organising a series of exciting sports and recreation events that the whole community will be able to enjoy. In line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, QF’s planned activities on Tuesday 11 February is a clear reminder of the organisation’s continued efforts to develop society by encouraging people to practice sports and follow a healthy lifestyle.

Qatar Foundation will open its doors to the whole family, both young and old, and encourage them to take part in a number of activities. These include running, football, basketball, tennis, swimming and cricket. There will also be organised activities for disabled members of the community as well as bouncy castles and drawing stations for children.

The events will take place in six major locations across QF, each hosting a particular set of activities. In the run up to the day-long event, a number of sports tournaments have already begun. Teams made up of QF employees from various departments have been competing against each another in football, tennis and open squash tournaments. Male students have been competing in basketball, handball and futsal tournaments, with female students competing in the open basketball championship. The final games for each sports tournament will be played on National Sports Day. Activities will take place between 9am – 3pm, with awards being presented to the winners at 4pm.

Noora Bu-Helaiqa, Head of Public Relations at Qatar Foundation, “Qatar Foundation is keen on participating in every activity that helps educate Qatari society about the importance of sports in leading a healthy lifestyle. Sports and health have a crucial role to play in the human development aspect of Qatar National Vision 2030”. Bu-Helaiqa added: “The activities that we have organised this year fall within the context of raising awareness about the importance of different sports, and they are open to all people living in Qatar, regardless of age, so that everyone can participate in a fun and friendly family atmosphere.”

QF has opened a special page on its website, with details of all the activities it will be hosting and how to participate. Members of the public will also be able to watch the day unfold via a live broadcast of events on social media platforms.

QF’s celebration of National Sport Day is part of its social responsibility programme, which aims to promote sports and healthy lifestyles. The organisation also offers its students, employees and family members modern gyms and sports facilities, with state-of-the-art equipment, which they can use throughout the year.

Qatar has placed great emphasis on sports and health, which is manifested through the Amiri Decree (80), 2011, which states that every second Tuesday in February should be celebrated as National Sport Day.
