LoYAC holds first Darb monthly meeting in partnership with Standard Chartered Bank

On June 6^th 2013 LoYAC Jordan held the first monthly meeting at the Institute of Banking Studies bringing together all the participants in the Darb Internship Program from Amman and the governorates. Darb is LoYAC’s main program, currently underway, offering paid summer internships to university students for 6-8 weeks. Darb program is supported and funded by King Abdullah II Fund for Development whose offices in all the Universities in Jordan assist in implementing it.

LoYAC Jordan aims at empowering youth and helping them realize their full potential by providing them with opportunities such as internships, voluntary work and job opportunities. The first part of the monthly meeting was in partnership with Standard Chartered Bank. SCB, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program, aims at engaging its employees in community service activities based on their skills, interest and expertise. As a result, SCB conducted a technical training program in which 17 employees from SCB delivered 25 classes on technical skills to 538 students. Around 163 students came from different governorates to attend the training.

SCB employees arranged the training material each based on his/her expertise (marketing, HR, IT, accounting, customer service etc…). Interactive workshops took place throughout the day and students were given the chance to rotate after each session so as to gain perspective in various areas of business.

The training which was attended by students participating in the Summer Internship Program “Darb” 2013 aimed to improve students’ soft skills to help them give meaningful contribution to their hosting companies and get valuable knowledge in exchange. The second part of the meeting included team-building activities and an entertainment segment by talented students. Students expressed the importance of these meetings and their role in improving their experiences and preparing them for the workplace and enhancing their sense of independence and responsibility.                                 

At the opening session of the training, Mr. Vasken Ajemian, the Head of Wholesale Banking of Standard Chartered Bank emphasized the importance of the partnership between LoYAC and SCB in that they both believe in building youth capacity by improving their knowledge and technical skills so as to enhance their opportunities in the job market. Mr. Rami Shishan, the General Manager of LoYAC Jordan, addressed the importance of the relationship between the private sector and service institutions of civil society in creating a culture of voluntary work among them.
