Khalifa University wraps up GNEII course

Khalifa University announced today that it has wrapped up its second Gulf Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Institute GNEII fundamentals course.
This year saw over 22 fellows from a total of four GCC countries and Jordan complete the instructional aspect of the course, which focused on nuclear safety, security, safeguards and the connections between them.
GNEII is a collaboration between Khalifa University, Sandia National Laboratories Sandia and Texas A&M University’s Nuclear Security Science and Policy Institute NSSPI. It was designed to give future nuclear energy leaders the necessary knowledge to support them in future decision making.
The students were taught by over 10 instructors from around the world including, the United States, Russia, South Korea, Brazil and the United Kingdom.
“Collectively our instructors have over 250 years of experience in the nuclear field,” said Abdelaziz Al Madhloum, Manager of GNEII, “All of them are subject matter experts in different areas in the field of nuclear engineering and technology. They are the ideal people to be fostering the new generation of nuclear professionals and future decision makers.”
He continued, “GNEII furthers the UAE’s quest to become an intellectual and academic hub in the Gulf area. The institute provides the national energy programs with an enhanced understanding of the safety, safeguards and security aspects of nuclear energy, as well as, offering the international community a model for an educational institute that addresses the integrated 3S safety, safeguards and security methodology.”
The next step for the students in the GNEII program is their research project. Students will be required to conduct research in the technical and socio-technical aspects of nuclear energy safety, safeguards, security and nonproliferation. This part of the program will last 3 months.
