Internet Pirate is liable for $962,400 for illegally sharing OSN content

An internet pirate who helped millions of computer users illegally download premium High Definition content owned by leading pay-TV network OSN by operating a website was brought in for questioning by Abu Dhabi Police this week. The internet pirate, an OSN subscriber, immediately confessed his illegal acts and pleaded for an amicable settlement and financial compensation.
OSN identified 802 counts of piracy violations. While the OSN subscription terms and conditions stipulate a minimum penalty of US $1,200 per piracy act, the total amount of contractual damages reached US $962,400 which the pirate was asked to compensate OSN in violations of his OSN subscription contract.
The Arabian Anti-Piracy Alliance (AAA) filed a complaint on behalf of OSN with Abu Dhabi CID. Following questioning by the authorities the internet pirate made a full confession and agreed to a settlement to avoid any further legal action leading to imprisonment. The undisclosed settlement amount serves as a deterrent warning to other offenders who are involved in illegal downloading.
David Butorac, CEO of OSN said: "It's crucial to remind people what they're doing is illegal and highly damaging. Piracy threatens the whole entertainment industry and costs companies like ours billions. It’s important that together with the authorities and AAA we keep applying pressure on illegal pirates. Illegal file sharing is a serious matter and in future OSN won’t hesitate in taking further action beyond compensation.”
Scott Butler, CEO of AAA said: “This recent action shows the effectiveness of government-coordinated operations against internet sharing profiteers. We commend the UAE Government for taking the lead in efforts to address these evolving forms of piracy. This compensation sets a precedent that all violations of intellectual property rights will be strictly pursued.”
M.M., the internet pirate said: “I have been ignorant of the consequences in violating the law, and now realise the seriousness of my actions after being taken to the police station. I will now use the site forums to educate the public about the benefits of intellectual property rights and the protection of the rights of industry. I’m grateful to OSN for settling the case. I understand the consequences of the crime I have committed and breaking the law is not worth ruining my reputation and the respect of the family and friends, as well as harming the economy of the country.”
