A learning ground for aspiring photographers and a platform to refine the skills of the professional ones, Xposure 2017, organised by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB), is a must-visit for photography enthusiasts. With a mix of workshops, exhibitions and exciting activities, Xposure is one-of-its-kind event that brings expertise and talent on the same stage for a celebration of photography, in the heart of UAE.

The opening day of the event concluded with a number of workshops held by world-renowned photographers throughout the day. Alan Ranger, the UK-based professional photographer and qualified photography tutor, remained the star of the show. In a workshop titled ‘Composition’, Ranger shared insights into creating visually compelling photographs. The participants learnt about photographic composition - a crucial element for great photos.

With the help of examples, Ranger described how composition is the most important part of a photograph and is the first thing that catches the eye. During the interactive session, Ranger answered the queries on the importance of proportion in photographic composition, starting off with the photographic frame, and the concept of subject placement. He went on to discuss in detail the specific forms of proportion such as balance, the rule of thirds, golden ratio and its variants.

Later, in another workshop titled ‘Light and Filters’, Ranger elaborated on expanding the dynamic range of natural light recorded. He elaborated on improving the tonal range in photos through the use of filters and/or bracketing exposures.

The last workshop of the day titled ‘Photography for Image Libraries’ conducted by Colin Hawkins, a professional product photographer based in Bath, helped the participants learn how to get the most out of the images with the potential to license and sell them through online image libraries.

Xposure, the International Photography Festival that runs until November 25 includes various such workshops to ignite the creativity and help make available expert knowledge from successful photographers under one roof. The workshops, covering an array of skills and knowledge, will include location photography, street photography, aerial photography, product photography, underwater photography and photo archiving, among other genres.

Those interested in registering for the event and learning more about the Festival, its agenda, seminars and workshops, may visit www.xposure.ae/workshops and follow updates through social networking platforms by using #xposurexpf.

The four-day event will include 32 of the world’s most celebrated photographers, and feature 25 sessions, lectures and live-stage events that aim to reveal the incredible power and influence of photographs in transcending linguistic barriers and geographical boundaries.
