ENOC marks World Environment Day with employees pledging to reduce ‘foodprint’

Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) marked the World Environment Day on June 5 with employees pledging to use natural resources judiciously for reducing food wastage and minimising losses across the food supply chain.
In line with the theme of the World Environment Day celebrations this year, ‘Think, Eat, Save,’ employees at ENOC signed a large canvas set at the company’s headquarters in Dubai, with personal messages committing to reduce food wastage.
According to estimates, every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally, which ends up in landfills leading to methane, a greenhouse gas, that in turn cause environmental degradation and global warming. Through the initiative, ENOC aimed to encourage every employee to take relevant action from their homes and by making lifestyle modifications to promote judicious use of food resources.
Saeed Khoory, Chief Executive Officer of ENOC said: “The World Environment Day celebrations at ENOC underlined the organisation-wide commitment to promote the rational use of resources, particularly food, in line with the theme this year. Food wastage is a serious concern that not only impacts the availability of resources but also leads to adverse environmental impacts.
“Our employees pledged to reduce their ‘foodprint’ through several personalised pledges that even involved lifestyle modifications to promote rational use of food resources. We firmly believe that collective action, through the efforts of a number of individuals, can lead to positive change for our environment.”
Among the pledges that ENOC’s employees took for a sustainable future are messages such as: “I will buy locally produced products,’ and ‘I will observe a meat-free day every week,’ among others.
ENOC’s participation in the World Environment Day celebrations is also part of its corporate social responsibility to uphold the highest standards in environment, health, safety and quality management, touching all cross-sections of the society. The organisation is also committed to sustainable development having introduced several path-breaking initiatives including the launch of the Middle East’s first green fuel station.
