Dubai Customs foils bid to smuggle 60 thousand counterfeit CDs

Dubai Customs inspectors at the Free Zone of Dubai International Airport foiled a bid to smuggle a huge amount of counterfeited CDs for different uses. The contraband was hidden inside a car spare-part cargo which was coming from an Arab country.

The seizure took place when Dubai Customs inspection staff searched the cargo coming from an Arab country. It was listed under the “customs import declaration” category for a local company. Inspectors were able to find 30 parcels containing around 60 thousand counterfeit CDs bearing the Sony PlayStation trademark.

Mr. Omar Ahmed Al Muhairy, Senior Manager of Air Cargo Operations at Dubai Customs said the Department is keen on combatting smuggling of fake goods and products as part of its efforts in the field of protecting intellectual property rights and facilitating legitimate trade movement. Dubai Customs provides its inspectors at all customs centers with intensive training courses and workshops which help them identify counterfeited items and halt their entries into the UAE. The Department also equips  its inspectors with the most hi-tech mobile and fixed tools which allow them to uncover all customs-related violations committed by dealers and smugglers who attempt to enter their contrabands through Dubai’s entries.

He stressed as well that the efforts made to combat IPR infringement cases by Dubai Customs inspectors increase the investors, traders and trademark owners’ trust in the feasibility of investment in the UAE. They also help multiply foreign capitals into the UAE’s local markets while giving the necessary legal guarantees to safeguard their rights against counterfeiting and commercial fraud, in addition to contributing directly to putting a stop to the entry of false products into the local market which increases the consumers’ trust in the original products purchased.
