Abu Dhabi University launches new Bachelor of Law in Arabic

Abu Dhabi University is well on its way to participate in the development of national cadres in the much-revered field of judicial and law practitioners that corresponds with the needs of the policy agenda of Abu Dhabi’s Government and its Economic Vision 2030. With the launch of the University’s new Bachelor of Law degree in Arabic, the first cohort of students have commenced their studies in the 4-year long program on both of the University’s Abu Dhabi and Al Ain campuses, and getting a strong foundation of knowledge in both practical and theoretical studies of law.
Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University, Dr. Nabil Ibrahim explained that the design and launch of the new Bachelor of Law was poised after several extensive and rigorous studies of the labor market in the UAE, its current and future projection needs of professional law practitioners in various fields. “It was vital that we ensure that ADU’s Bachelor of Law develops graduates with the highest degree of professionalism, and the ability to deal with the requirements of national and international legislation, which are subject to application in the disputes and various issues of concern to the United Arab Emirates. The program aims at preparing students to familiarize themselves thoroughly with the concepts of basic rules of law, economics, and sharia as well as master the research tools and methods of analysis and drafting of legal documents, and be aware of the political, economic, administrative, and technological developments, and their impact on the legal process. Additionally the program introduces students to the various applications of law in civil society, human rights, democracy and the principles governing the ethics of the practice of this revered profession. It also works on developing students skills in interpreting legal texts and developing solutions to various legal issues, while adhering to the Arab and Islamic values adopted and practiced by judicial and law practitioners in the region. Students will also be able to understand the basic concepts of Islamic law, and competently compare between legislative, jurisprudence and judicial solutions, as well as formulate legal briefs and lawsuits in perfect Arabic language newspapers using sound legal terminology and logic,” added Dr. Ibrahim.
The Chancellor also pointed out that the program has already received accreditation from the Commission of Academic Accreditation of the UAE’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
On his part, Dr. Radwan Al Jarrah Dean of Abu Dhabi University’s College of Arts and Sciences stressed that students need to complete 129 credit hours to graduate with the Bachelor of Law degree. “The program’s credit hours have been divided to 21 credit hours of compulsory study requirements that will enhance languages, communication and research skills. As well as 96 credit hours dedicated to the major’s requirements that include: law and Islamic jurisprudence, the principles of economics, the study of commercial and administrative law, the general penal code, and legal studies and terminology, the code of civil procedure, political systems and constitutional law, public international law, as well as maritime and aviation laws. With the remaining 12 credit hours for major electives on law of international organizations, and criminology and punishment, the Consumer Protection Act, the Environmental Protection Act, and intellectual property law amongst others,” concluded Dr. Al Jarrah.

The dream began with the Charter of Abu Dhabi University in the year 2000, After three years of planning, the university opened its doors in September 2003, to an entering class of 1,000 students on its two campuses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Unlike other colleges and universities in the UAE, ADU undertook the measures necessary to ensure that all of the degree programs it would offer had secured accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in advance of any students enrolling in them.
