100 DP World, UAE Region staff donate blood as part of drive against Thalassemia
In line with its corporate social responsibility objectives of raising public awareness of the genetic blood disorder Thalassemia, DP World, UAE Region participated in a blood donation campaign to support the Dubai Blood Donation Centre run by the Dubai Health Authority.
More than 100 employees from various departments volunteered to donate blood at a special camp set up in Jebel Ali Port. Most of the collected blood is used for patients who undergo transfusions at Dubai Thalassemia Centre at Al Wasl Hospital.
DP World is a committed supporter of the blood donation drive, which the centre conducts regularly through its various campaigns and initiatives. DP World has also supported education lectures and donated medical equipment and a recreational centre to the Dubai Thalassemia Centre.
Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said: “Our support for the Dubai Health Authority’s blood donation campaign is integral to our broader goal of spreading awareness about the need to actively combat Thalassemia. We aim to support those living with it through such initiatives. The Dubai Thalassemia Centre has been doing a pioneering job in caring for its patients and deserves our committed support now and in the future.”
Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that is more prevalent in the UAE than in many other parts of the world. It affects some 8.5 per cent of UAE Nationals, meaning one in 12 is a carrier.
