Providing content and application services alone will not be sufficient to ensure success in tapping the vast potential of mobile commerce, telecommunications leaders were told at a Singapore seminar last week.
"Content and application will be the cornerstone on which mobile commerce will be built, but the ability to personalize them is also important," IBM emerging technology director William Chung told the Telecom Global 2000 conference.
Young people will dominate usage of mobile commerce and products have to be tailored to specific needs rather than mass-produced, he said, citing the mobile phone where the trend was for smaller and more sleek designs.
"The mobile phone has become a fashion accessory, not just a communication tool," he said. The impact of mobile commerce was irreversible and will change the way people live, Chung said. "As a society, we are demanding access to information anywhere, anytime." — (AFP, Singapore)
