The export of agricultural produce from the Gaza Strip to European markets has continued in November 2002. A total of 110 tons of strawberries and 1.5 million cut flowers (approximately 50 tons) were shipped out, in addition to some 40 tons of cherry tomatoes and 1000 tons of potatoes, according to Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture.
The Palestinian agricultural sector has been devastated by Israeli military incursions since the outbreak of the latest uprising in September 2000. These measures include closures and the uprooting of trees, meant to deprive gunmen of cover. According to official Palestinian estimates, the sector has so far incurred $820 million in losses.
Gaza strip’s economy depends on agriculture and light industries. The major agricultural products are citrus, olives, dates, flowers and strawberries. Industry includes food products, plastics, construction materials, furniture, textile, garment and other traditional industries such as pottery, bamboo furniture, carpets, glass coloring, sea fishing and embroidery. — (menareport.com)
