Logica announced that it has enabled the Oman Telecommunications Company (OmanTel), the Sultanate's provider of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), to introduce short messaging services (SMS). As part of the new text-messaging service, GSM subscribers in Oman can now send and receive e-mails via mobile phone.
The OmanTel SMS offering is now available to more than 300,000 GSM subscribers in the Sultanate. Omantel is a Sultanate of Oman government establishment, which functions as the sole fixed and GSM operator in Oman.
“Text messaging is among the fastest-growing segments of the region's telecommunications market and we were determined to launch this service as well as an innovative e-mail component for GSM subscribers, with Logica being the key element to the success of the new service,” stated Ghulam Bin Ibrahim Al-Balushi, OmanTel’s Mobile Communications Unit general manager.
Al-Balushi added, “As OmanTel develops its infrastructure into a third-generation (3G) mobile network, services such as SMS and e-mail via text messaging will enable us to meet customer demand for new value-added offerings.”
In 1999, analysts estimated that the number of text messages sent globally per month reached one billion and it is predicted that global mobile users will send more than 100 billion messages monthly by the end of 2002.
