The US-led occupying Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) has announced that it has awarded about $1.6 million in contracts for community projects in the region of Diwaniyah, Iraq.

According to a CPA press release, the grant is “part of a larger initiative to help Iraqis as they move toward democracy and a sovereign government.” Additional funding projects will be announced in the coming weeks.

The money will provide repairs to the following: a chicken farm, internet café for health centers, Refaat Sewage Network, eight banks, and the region’s police headquarters building. It will assist with fuel and electricity issues by repairing the central fuel station, 33KV towers, an electrical warehouse, and four electrical substations.

The funds will also repair and rebuild schools in in Hamza, Afak, Ghamas, Al-Sadar, as well as the Al-Rajaa Handicapped Institute.

According to the CPA, local Iraqi contractors were chosen from a competitive bidding process. All the money, funds seized from former regime assets, is given in increments, and as the work is properly completed, more money will be given to the Iraqi contractors. — (menareport.com)
