Revenue authorities in Israel and the United States are studying information which could link Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his son Omri to tax evasion, Israel’s Channel 2 reported.

The alleged evasions were said to have taken place during Sharon’s 1999 right-wing Likud party primaries campaign. The pair is suspected violating tax laws, after Omri signed checks belonging to a private company without being a designated signatory. The amounts cited were in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The fresh accusations will add to the controversy already surrounding Sharon after his former campaign aid revealed last month on national television that he had lied about bribery and money laundering charges surrounding his 1999 election campaign.

Sharon, generally known for his role in facilitating the violence against hundreds of Palestinians of the Sabra and Chatila refugee camp in West Beirut, Lebanon, dismissed corruption reports last January calling them “vicious political slander”. — (menareport.com)
