Lebanon’s Council of Development and Reconstruction (CDR) has opened the Sayad section of the Damascus highway for traffic. The road is part of the $8.5 million Beirut Circular Road Project linking the major coastal and southern highways of the country.
The designing of the road project began in 1993 and construction began in 2000. The highway network includes 13 bridges with an average length of 850 meters, rainfall and sanitary drainage systems and a telecommunication network.
Beirut suffers from severe traffic congestion and deteriorating air quality. The problem of congestion is exacerbated by heavy reliance on private cars with approximately 250 cars per 1000 inhabitants — (menareport.com).
