Company Press Release:

National Bank of Dubai announced that three of its branches are geared up to sell the newly introduced e-dirham cards, a pre-paid smart card that can be used by the public for making payments to government departments.

The e-dirham cards, which were introduced by the UAE's Ministry of Finance, are currently available in five denominations of Dhs 100, Dhs 300, Dhs 500, Dhs 3,000 and Dhs 5,000, and are available at the NBD Main Office Branch, NBD's Al Ittihad Road Branch and NBD's Sheikh Zayed Branch.

National Bank of Dubai's involvement with the e-dirham card initiative is part of their ongoing efforts to continuously facilitate customer choice and offer new and improved products and services.

The Ministries of Labor and Immigration are the first government departments to accept the card, within which 150 POS terminals have already been installed. It is expected that permission will be granted to make payments to other ministries and departments while simultaneously rolling out the cards to other Emirates and installing additional POS terminals.

It is anticipated that the e-dirham card will replace up to 80 percent of governmental payments which are presently conducted through stamps and manual receipts, thus facilitating customer payments and dramatically cutting internal administrative costs. In addition the cards reduce the use of cash in the payment of dues and thus reduce the potential risks often incurred when carrying cash.

The e-dirham card, which has a validity period of three years from the date of purchase and are already available throughout Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Sharjah, can be used either at the POS terminals or alternatively through the Internet, with the serial number on the reverse of the card acting as the card holders signature.

By April of this year it is expected that the e-dirham card will be rolled out in different variations including a new smart card that can be recharged with additional funds and another specifically for government clients.

NBD is regarded as one of the most prominent banking institutions in the country and embraces the latest customer-oriented technological developments, with a view to constantly updating systems and introducing new banking services in order to remain at the forefront of the UAE's banking industry.
