Ramco Energy plc (Ramco), the energy and oil services group focused on exploration and production, today announces that, following the analysis of data from the MOC-01z well in the Muradkhanli field, onshore Azerbaijan, Ramco’s operating company MOC has issued detailed tender invitations to major service companies to carry out a comprehensive test programme.

The programme will commence in February, with testing expected to be finished by the end of March 2001.

Ramco announced on 18 October 2000, that following perforation and testing of the main target reservoir in the Middle Eocene, it had decided to suspend temporarily the MOC-1z well.

The Company demobilised the rig and other service companies in order to minimise costs whilst it evaluated all the options to work-over the well to improve the productivity of the perforated zone and to test the other prospective intervals in the well.

Whilst drilling the MOC-01 sidetrack, Middle Eocene fractured reservoirs briefly flowed oil at rates equivalent to 5,000 bopd prior to being shut-in as a result of well control measures.

Having studied all of the data from the well, the Company believes that these fractures were blocked by drilling mud, lost circulation material, and cement prior to perforating.

Perforating guns used to access these fractures may therefore have been insufficient to penetrate beyond the damaged zone, resulting in inconclusive test rates.

Ramco’s operating company, MOC, has therefore issued tenders to the leading service companies, to conduct a comprehensive work-over programme with the objective of determining conclusively whether or not the well is capable of commercial oil production.

The intention is to remove the existing completion equipment, to re-perforate the Middle Eocene with more powerful perforating guns, and to fracture through the reservoir in order to reach the undamaged zone of natural fractures. A number of other oil-bearing zones may also be tested.

The work-over tender deadline is 10th January 2001, and it is anticipated that the work will be awarded by the end of January, and testing completed by the end of March.
