The Moroccan Railways Public Authority plans to invest five billion dollars to renew the local railway system over the course of the next five years, reported Al-Hayat newspaper.
The authority will acquire and operate 24 modern train cars, as well install electronic traffic lights and signs in order to assure maximum safety and security. The authority will soon publicize a tender for the provision of the new cars.
According to the report, the revenues of the Moroccan Railways Authority totaled $200 million in 1999. Of these revenues, the authority invested $120 million to renew its facilities.
The Moroccan railways system is 1,907-kilometers long, and transports 12 million passengers annually. Passengers traveling between Casablanca and Rabat constitute half of the overall railway users. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
