The number of tourists who visited Morocco in January went up drastically in comparison with last year's figures. Foreign visitors during the month of January amounted to 408,484, according to data published by the Ministry of Tourism reported and cited by MAP. All in all, they increased by 13% year-on-year along with hotel night-stays which totaled 989,077 (+18%).
French tourists rank first during the said period with 85,613 visitors (+28%), followed by Spaniards with 49,225 visitors (+136%), Germans (+8% to 10,948 visitors), British (+13% to 9,782 visitors), Italians (+31% to 9,470), Belgians (+60% to 8,927 visitors), tourists of Middle Eastern origin (+11% to 6,403 visitors), and from the Maghreb countries (+24% to 5,693 visitors).
A drop of Moroccans living abroad who visited the country was posted (-9%), along with American tourists (-5%).
According to the figures, January's foreign travel receipts amounted to MAD 2.96 billion, up 7.1% year-on-year. In addition to this increase in foreign receipts, Moroccan travel expenditures overseas declined by 8.5% to MAD 455.4 million resulting in a 10.5% improvement of the net balance to MAD 2.5 billion.
