Moroccan authorities are presently evaluating several bids submitted for a recently published international wheat purchasing tender, according to Al-Hayat daily. The decision comes as part of an attempt to bridge the local wheat supply gap, caused by prevailing drought conditions facing the country for more than three years.
Official sources reveal that Morocco imported 6.72 million tons of wheat since the beginning of 2001 through the end of July 2001. Local annual consumption wheat stands at 10 million tons. During the current agricultural season, domestic wheat output totaled 4.6 million tons. Recently, importing wheat has become less expensive than purchasing locally produced wheat due to the water crisis. — (Mena Report)
