The Moroccan aviation sector has been receiving a great deal of attention from Moroccan authorities, especially after recent liberalization measures were applied for this sector.
Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper recently reported that the total area allocated for aviation terminals expanded from 56,000 square meters in 1991 to 120,000 square meters in 2000. By the end of 2001, aviation terminals area is expected to rise as high as 162,000 square meters.
The number of passengers using the various Moroccan aviation terminals amounted to 6.8 million in 1999. This figure is expected to grow up to 27 million in 2020. Passenger movement through the King Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca is expected to increase from the three million of last year to 14 million by the year 2020.
Director General of Moroccan National Airports Authority, Ahmed Al-Bayaz, was cited by Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, stating that the authority has been making efforts to boost the civil aviation sector and expand the aviation terminals network throughout the kingdom.
The director added, that the civil aviation sector would not only boost the growth of tourism in Morocco, but would also accelerate the integration of Morocco in the worldwide globalization process.
