Mohand Laenser, Moroccan minister of agriculture said in a conference of North African agriculture ministers at Tunis that the anti-desertification effort is under way but that the population should remain vigilant.
The minister stated that Morocco has allocated US$50 million to treat 650,000 hectares, about 10% of the total area treated in the whole Maghreb Union (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.)
Laenser also made an appeal for international bodies on behalf of Mauritania which is particularly badly affected but has not benefited from the aid received by neighboring Senegal, Niger and Mali.
The conference concluded that there is a need for closer cooperation between Maghreb Union countries.
