ALBAWABA – Microsoft, the American multinational corporation and technology company, said Iranian-linked hackers tried to attack diverse accounts for US presidential campaign officials in June. This incident is documented as Iranian groups attempted to influence the US presidential elections.

Accounts of US officials were hacked

The researchers from Microsoft did not reveal the names or identities of the US officials involved. According to their report, there were two hacking incidents targeting two US officials. These attempts were attributed to Iranian-linked hackers and were aimed at influencing the US presidential elections scheduled for November 2024.

Iran used confidential social media accounts

It is worth noting that the recent report issued by Microsoft came after the recent statements by senior US intelligence officials, confirming Iran’s increasing use of confidential social media accounts to stir up the political situation in the United States.

Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations stated that Iran’s cyber capabilities are defensive and adequate for the threats the country faces. The mission also stressed on the fact that Iran is not planning to launch any cyber-attacks at the current time, as reported by Reuters.

The mission also responded to the accusations mentioned in Microsoft’s recent report by saying that the US presidential elections are an internal affair in which Iran does not interfere.

On the other hand, the report issued by Microsoft indicated a broader Iranian campaign aimed at collecting intelligence information on US political campaigns. Hackers were not able to access other accounts and the targeted officials were notified, as per Microsoft’s report.
