ALBAWABA - Meta reported that Iranian organizations tried to hack WhatsApp accounts of Biden administration and Trump campaign officials before the election.

Meta stated in a recent statement on "malicious accounts" on WhatsApp that Iran-based organizations targeted users in the Middle East, the U.S., and the U.K., as well as individuals associated to President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

No evidence suggests any of the targeted accounts were compromised, Meta said. These gangs, who impersonated tech support staff, had their accounts shut down, the business said.

On August 11, Trump's campaign staff claimed intrusions on their email addresses, suggesting Iran was behind the leak of critical internal campaign materials.

FBI, DODNI, and CISA released a unified statement on August 20. The statement acknowledged that U.S. intelligence services believe Iranian agents are using social engineering to get access to U.S. political campaign participants. The statement claims these operations aim to sway the U.S. election.

The statement also stated that Iran's electoral meddling is not new and that the FBI has been examining it for years.
