ALBAWABA - Hackers have gained access to the official Instagram page of the fast-food franchise McDonald's in order to sell a deceptive token that is based on the Solana cryptocurrency dubbed ‘Grimace’.
A post on the chain's Instagram page linked to a "McDonald's experiment" on the blockchain platform Solana, according to screenshots shared by users on X (formerly). Another post urged readers to share if they had the coin with the name of Grimace, the purple figure from the chain.
According to a screenshot that has been making the rounds on the internet, the description on the Instagram page of McDonald's has been altered to read "Sorry mah n–ga you have just been rug pulled by India_X_Kr3w thank you for the $700,000 in Solana."
An emoji of the Indian flag was added in the description, which was viewable to McDonald's account's more than 5.1 million Instagram followers.
Within two hours, the cryptocurrency was able to accumulate about $20 million in trade volume, according to DEX Screener statistics, before plummeting in value. McDonald's had to spend over two hours regaining access to the account, and all postings pertaining to the memecoin have been removed.
McDonald’s responded in a statement it was “aware of an isolated incident that impacted our social media accounts earlier today,” New York Post reports, adding “We have resolved the issue on those accounts and apologize to our fans for any offensive language posted during that time.”
