In line with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government’s copyright protection laws, one man has been arrested by the Sharjah Police and criminally charged with failing to uphold the country’s copyright law, following a police raid against a company suspected of trading in illegal software.
In total, 45 counterfeit CDs carrying a whole range of unlicensed business software programs and two PCs loaded with illegal software including Windows ME, Office 2000, AutoCAD
2002 and Adobe Photoshop were seized from the Sharjah-based company.
Pirated software hinders local software developers, legal computer shops from conducting their business and takes away the support factor that most legal software customers would normally enjoy because of the low margins involved and because software manufacturers do not support illegal software. For every sale of illegal software, the reseller looses the opportunity of selling added services such as training and support.
