A joint venture between the Finnish Sonera Telecom (14 percent) and a group of local investors (86 percent). The company was incorporated in Beirut in November 1994 after it was awarded a BOT contract by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications for establishing a GSM 900MHz cellular network covering the entire country. 

 

The company was first to introduce prepaid cards in September 1997.  

 

LibanCell serves today approximately 350,000 subscribers, manages a network comprising two Gateway Mobile Switching Centers, five Mobile Switching Centers/Visitor Location Registers, two Home Location Registers/Authentification Centers, 27 Base Station Controllers, 306 Radio Base Stations, out of which 53 are micro-cells.  

 

Siemens and Motorola supply Libancell with the technological equipment.
