The LG Electronics sponsored Kuwaiti football club, Al Qadsia, won the ‘21st GCC Clubs Championship’ tournament in Kuwait. The club also bagged awards for the best goalkeeper and best player in the tournament.

Al Qasdia, the oldest and most popular club in Kuwait, beat teams from Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, UAE and Saudi Arabia to win the tournament. Participating teams included clubs like Um Salal, Qatar; Muscat Club, Oman; Al Etafaq, Saudi Arabia; Al Refaa, Bahrain; and Al Wasal, UAE. The winners were adjudged on the basis of points scored overall and Al Qasdia drew the last match against Muscat Club from Oman, to win the series. This is the team’s first tournament under LG’s sponsorship; it will now play five local and four international tournaments during the season in various locations in the GCC, against teams from UAE, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

“LG is synonymous with football and has supported the growth of the game enthusiastically in the region. As a company, LG believes in recognising talent and potential and is committed to building links with the local community by promoting sport in the region,” said C H Lee, President, LG Electronics Gulf FZE. “Formed in 1961, Al Qadsia is Kuwait’s largest and oldest club. The club leads in all sporting events and is supported by the majority of Kuwaiti football fans. We believe that our support to the team will help them entertain football fans across the region.”

Al Babtain Electronics, LG’s local partner in Kuwait, awarded DVD-VCR combination sets to the top scorer in every match. A 29-inch LG Flatron TV was given away to the best player and the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

By sponsoring the team, LG is investing in training, facilities and equipment for players. The company also supports the Iraqi football team and hosts the LG Cup in Middle East that attracts international teams from the region.

“We believe sponsorship is one of the best ways of getting closer to our customers. It allows us to share and support their interests and to build a personal relationship with them. There is no greater vehicle for this in the Middle East than through football, with the region’s enormous fan base and passion for the game,” said Sharad Kumar, Assistant Vice President, Al Babtain Electronics, Kuwait.
