Lebanon's President Michel Sleiman called Monday on the Central Inspection to launch a swift inquiry on the reasons which caused the Turkish electricity barge Fatmagül Sultan to stop producing electricity.
“Investigations should show what caused the boat to stop producing electricity and to hold those responsible accountable,” the president said, according to a statement from his office.
Sources said that Electricite du Liban (EDL) is holding talks with the company operating the barge to speed up repairs and resume production as soon as possible.
EDL denied Monday that the cause of the stoppage was due to the poor quality of fuel oil. But the Turkish firm insists that the low quality of fuel affected the electricity production.
EDL has not explicitly said whether it would slap fines on the company if production suddenly ceased.
Under a $360 million three-year contract signed by the Energy Ministry in 2012, the Lebanese government is responsible for supplying the fuel needed to operate the turbines.å
