The Lebanese ministry of post and telecommunications is considering reducing monthly subscriptions and local calls connection fees with the aim of increasing the volume of calls, despite a tentative offset plan in the draft budget introducing a flat-rate charge on telephone bills to help finance the state-owned television station.

Last year, the ministry of post and telecommunications reduced the cost of international calls by around 25 percent to combat illegal phone calls, and it contributed $433 million to the treasury, up 56 percent from 1999.

The higher revenue is thought to be the result of cost-measures and a higher volume of calls. — (Banque du Liban et d'Outre-Mer Sal)
