A new tourism project, the Assad Euphrates complex, will be constructed by 2006 on the Assad Lake, according to Syrian Tourism Ministry plans. The private Kuwaiti investment company Al-Futuh. will be financing the $60-million project
The Syrian-Kuwaiti agreement was recently signed by Syrian Tourism Minister Qassim Maqdad and Al-Futuh general manager, Shaikh Nassir Sabah Al-Ahmad, son of Kuwait's foreign minister, reported Al-Sharq Al-Awsat.
The project will span over a 300-hectare area on the lake’s northern shore, near the city of Raqa. The complex’s leisure facilities include suites, villas, chalets, restaurants, and business services, as well as a sports and cultural center with swimming pools, a theater, a water park and an Olympic golf course. Assad Lake is the reservoir created by the Euphrates Dam, built in 1973 in northern Syria. — (Mena Report)
