The Jordan Telecommunications Company (JTC) recorded a fixed-line subscriber base of 660,000 in 2001 and a penetration rate of 12.7 percent. The company’s mobile subscriber base surpassed fixed-line figures by close to 200,000 at the end of 2001, a 122 percent increase compared to figures from 2000, confirmed a recently released report compiled by the local Export and Finance Bank.
According to the report, JTC’s Internet subscribers more than doubled last year reaching 68,000, as online subscription fees decreased by approximately 50 percent during the same period. Pager subscription dropped from 23,000 in 1999 to 4,400 in 2001 and the number of operational pay phones decreased from 7,000 in 2000 to 5,000 last year.
Jordan Telecom, with an estimated capital of 520 million Jordanian dinars ($738 million), was re-launched in 1997 as Jordan's foremost provider of communications services. The company operates the Jordanian national technology infrastructure, delivering the infrastructure for a number of ISP's and mobile service providers. France Telecom along with The Arab Bank signed in January 2000 a $508 million deal to acquire 40 percent of Jordan Telecom. — (menareport.com)
