The United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) transferred $18 million to the Jordanian government on Wednesday. The money will be handed over to a number of Jordanian businessmen who sustained losses as a result of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990-1991.
According to the Secretary General of Jordan’s Ministry of Labor Majed Habashneh, the government will not distribute the funds until it has received a list from the UNCC confirming the names of the recipients, reported Jordan Times.
The compensation was awarded as part of a $184 million UNCC disbursement released on January 22, 2004, to claimants who suffered damages as a result of Iraq's invasion and occupation of Kuwait. Among the 24 nations that will receive compensation are seven governments from the Middle East. Kuwait will collect $125.6 million, Bahrain $105 million, Israel $1.8 million, Lebanon $542,973 million, Saudi Arabia $1.4 million and Palestinians $15.7 million.
Over 2.6 million claims with a total asserted value of $350 billion have been filed with the UNCC, which has so far approved some $48 billion and released nearly $18.2 billion.
The recent payment applies to claimants who fall under compensation categories D, E and F. These requests were submitted by individuals for damages above $100,000, corporations, other private legal entities and public sector enterprises and governments and international organizations. — (menareport.com)
