A Jordanian court order, issued Friday, November 29, has declared the activity of the local Anti-Normalization Committee illegal, reported the official news agency Petra. The board, which operates within the country’s professional trade unions, leads boycott campaigns against Israeli and American goods and companies.
Representing some 140,000 union members, the politically active syndicate publishes blacklists of businessmen who trade with Israel. The engineers’ trade union council was also dissolved this week, due to electoral irregularities.
With prospects of a US-led war against the kingdom’s eastern neighbor Iraq looming, King Abdullah is facing mounting domestic risks. The kingdom which is a close regional ally of the United States, has also signed a peace treaty with its Western neighbor Israel in 1994. Tensions rose following the assassination of a US diplomat in October. Last week.
