A senior source in the Jordanian (Al-Ahli) National Bank recently revealed that the bank’s management had submitted a request to Syrian authorities to re-open its Damascus branch, which has been closed since the nineteen sixties, according to London based Al-Hayat daily.
The Jordanian request comes in the wake of recent banking reforms in Syria, whereby authorities now permit the operation of banks by the private sector.
Jordan National Bank was established in 1955 and currently operates 54 branches and offices in Jordan, four branches in Lebanon, one in Cyprus, and five branches in the West Bank. As of December 2000, the bank's sheet footing stood at $1.7 billion, shareholders equity amounted to $93.7 million, and its capital stood at $60 million. –(MENA Report)
