The Jordanian government is studying the possibility of including some of the agricultural professions within the Labor Law, a Jordan Agricultural Engineers Association (JAEA) member said on Saturday, March 3.
"To achieve that goal, a committee, representing the ministries of Agriculture and Labor and the [JAEA] was formed one month ago to come up with types of agricultural professions which ought to be included in the Labor Law," said the member, who preferred not to be named.
The committee's recommendations will be presented to the agriculture and labor ministers after the Eid Al-Adha holiday, which starts on Monday and concludes on Thursday. After the ministers read the recommendations, they would be submitted to the Prime Ministry.
The committee was formed in line with a letter presented by the JAEA to the Agriculture Ministry.
"The proposed recommendations, if approved, will help organize the agricultural sector and protect the agricultural workers' rights by including them in the Labor Law, consequently including them in the health insurance and social security systems.”
"Actually, many agricultural workers started deserting agricultural activities and working in other service fields which will not help improve the agricultural sector," he said.
Agricultural engineers, veterinarians, technicians, workers and others will be included in the recommendations. "The step will shift the perception of agricultural work from that of a vocation to that of a profession governed by a law," said the association member. — ( Jordan Times )
